I think America is pretty sweet, and Denver, CO, is a great place to live, even when–and perhaps because–our neighbors to the west erect a billboard like this. That’s right, Wheat Ridge, I’m talkin’ about you.

Phil Wolf of Wolf Automotive, which the Denver Post reports has dealerships in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, commissioned the sign at a cost of “a couple thousand dollars” and perhaps some customers. At least one group has already called for a boycott. About all this, Wolf sounds rather glib. “It’s a disgrace that political correctness is ruining this country.”

Right then. The easy, snarky blogger cop out would be to attack Wolf’s character and move on to more substantive discussion. But I’ll go straight for the substance and use this opportunity to simply reflect on how great and good it is to live in a nation that protects speech, even when such protections lead to abuses as odious as Wolf’s. For example, imagine what happens to Phil Wolf in, say, North Korea after a similar attack on Kim Jong Il.

A couple of years ago the Committee to Protect Journalists ran down the 10 most censored nations, and it turns out the U.S. isn’t on the list. So Phil Wolf ought to be able to keep his sign and feel pretty damn good about his constitutionally protected right to express himself. Unless of course he turns up in the wrong part of Oregon. Or in the wrong part of Pennsylvania. Or in the wrong part of Iowa. Or in the wrong part of West Virgina. Or even in the wrong part of Colorado.

Anyone notice a trend?

While I don’t support arresting Wolf, I also won’t be buying a vehicle from him. And that’s not merely rhetorical: we’re actually looking. Is anyone else sore from carting a baby in and out of a two-door car?
