Beutler on Schumer on Reid: We’ve Got the Votes

October 26, 2009 · Matt Plavnick · No Comments

I can’t pretend to know what twists and turns health care reform still must take before a bill is presented for a vote, but this write up from Brian Beutler is pretty interesting. Essentially, Beutler has Charles Schumer saying he and Harry Reid convinced the White House that the Senate could carry a strong public option (the opt-out model announced today). That’s pretty bold.

The piece has Schumer describing the White House’s caution as the Senate leaders made the case Thursday to drop the trigger plan and move forward with the more robust opt-out plan; Schumer and Reid basically are out on a limb now to deliver. That can only mean that they really, really believe they’ve got the 60 votes necessary to avoid a filibuster.

Schumer does not elaborate on how the vote counting shakes out, which is where the real juice is, but the post is worth a read to get a sense for what’s been happening in the run up to today’s announcement.
