9News Stokes Anger, Feeds Perceptions that Poor People Should Eat Like . . . Poor People

August 31st, 2009 · 2 Comments · Colorado, Media, Poverty

9News ran a special investigation last night on abuses in the use of Colorado food stamps. The companion article states “9NEWS is presenting both sides of the story so readers can make their own judgments.” Unfortunately, the channel’s hype undercuts any appearance of impartiality objectivity. [Late revision--Ed.] That the station relied on a single, unnamed [...]

NRSC Appears to Support Norton in 2010 Senate Bid

August 30th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Elections

Via John Tomasic, it appears that the National Republican Senatorial Committee has identified its candidate to run against Michael Bennet in 2010 (presuming Bennet can stave off a significant primary challenge). CompleteColorado.com posted a screen grab confirming that the NRSC has purchased a pair of domain names to promote ex-lieutenant governor Jane Norton’s bid for [...]

Where is Mark Udall on Health Care Reform?

August 27th, 2009 · No Comments · Colorado, Health care reform

Mark Udall has made a grand total of zero (0) public appearances this August to discuss health care reform with constituents. To call this disappointing is to understate the matter.
Disclaimer: I did a little volunteer work for Udall’s 2008 Senate run against Bob Schaffer. Maybe some of you received postcards in my distinctive scrawl.
From his [...]

AP Courses & Denver Public Schools

August 24th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Education

*CORRECTION: My original post cited a 19% pass rate among Lincoln High AP students on 2009 AP exams. That number in fact is 20% and has been amended below. Thanks to PF for the catch.
__________
Let me start by saying I think high expectations are a good thing in any classroom. That said, it’s also our [...]

Working Out the Kinks

August 23rd, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Since I’m my own Web master around here, and not a very good one, you’ll see kinks from time to time in these early days of Colorado Progressive such as the sweet example above, wherein the name “Colorado Progressive” exceeds the boundaries of the header image by a good three feet or so. Not to [...]

Denver Post Comes on Strong in Favor of Public Option

August 23rd, 2009 · No Comments · Health care reform

The Denver Post comes out today with a strong stand on the importance of the public option to meaningful health care reform. Perhaps the most surprising part? A substantial media outlet shrugs off the importance of false bipartisanship on this issue:

The Obama administration and congressional Democrats need to push forward with their plan to pass [...]

Dr. Sears Challenges Basic Flu Statistics

August 21st, 2009 · No Comments · Health

Fears were quickly stoked and pandemic warnings promptly issued when H1N1, also known as swine flu, first surfaced this spring. Shortly thereafter, calmer voices pointed out that the regular flu claims 36,000 lives a year. That number, however, seems to be in question:
There is a misconception about how serious the flu [regular flu] is in [...]

Should Obama Have Appeared with George Lopez?

August 19th, 2009 · No Comments · Elections

I see a little bit of buzz on Facebook this morning about Obama’s recent cameo with George Lopez in a promo for Lopez’s new show. Not everyone I’m reading in the FB comments is impressed.

A couple quick reactions:

First, that’s funny. That’s very funny. I’d check the show out if I had cable.
Lopez must have [...]

Polis on Trust, Plavnick on Rationing and Right vs. Privilege

August 18th, 2009 · No Comments · Health care reform

I tend to recoil from statements that run something like “There are two kinds of people . . . ” This time, however, I’ll give Jared Polis credit for nailing it: “There are those of you who trust an insurance company over the government and others who trust the government over insurance companies.”
When it [...]
